Medians are usually liminal neglected slices of public space that have the potential to transform the character of a street. In Hyderabad, barrier medians are higher than the standard (owing to level differences in the terrain) and made of locally-sourced granite. But medians don’t have to be limited to act only as barriers between vehicular lanes, but, when designed with sensitivity to context, can also be inclusive, transitional and accessible to pedestrians rather than divisive and exclusionary.
