Terra Nova

STATUS: CONCEPTUAL PROPOSAL/ COMPETITION ENTRY

A coffee table is the centerpiece of a living space. More than serving its function, it is a piece to gather around, and can become a sculptural element that becomes the nucleus of the room.

Terra Nova is an ode to the undulating terrain of the Deccan Plateau.

Inspired by the geometry of the ridges and valleys of the peculiar rock formations that the Deccan is known for, the metal frame base of the coffee table is derived from a high-resolution contour map of the city, projected to 3D and outlined in metal rods, creating an ornamental effect. The frame captures the dramatic topography in detailed, intricately crafted organic curves that hold up the tabletop in granite finish that pays homage to the solid, impregnable fortress that sits atop the rockscape of Hyderabad. A winding stream of pearl signifies the Musi River flowing through the City of Pearls.
Beyond a coffee table and an art piece, Terra Nova is a statement about the need to preserve the fast-depleting natural terrain and rock-formations of the city.

Terra Nova was shortlisted in the ICA Pidilite Coffee Table Design Competition by invitation to winners of the iGen 50 under 40 2024 by Architect & Interiors magazine. DesignAware Lead Interior Designer, Abeer Fatima was included on the iGen 50 list in 2024.
