Terraced in Tehran // Becoming architecture: Generative AI diffusion models make it possible to communicate architectural ideas before static outcomes, as an evolving conceptual thought process. Terraced in Tehran // Becoming architecture: Generative AI diffusion models make it possible to communicate architectural ideas before static outcomes, as an evolving conceptual thought process. Fractals 35.0: The Digital Vernacular 5.0 at @council_of_architecture_india Teachers Training Program #LetsFLOCKtogether Learning from master craftspersons // Artisans have perfected traditional techniques in natural material passed down from master to apprentice over generations. Learning these age-old crafts directly from the experts, as well as an understanding of materiality, supply chains and material lifecycles, informs our approach to design exploration in research, pedagogy and fabrication. Working under bamboo fabricators in Vellore, students of vsparcmakes designed and built a series of pavilions during the @fractalsworkshop 15.0: ProtoFolly in 2017. The 10-day workshop resulted in 8 parametric bamboo pavilions placed in the Woodstock forest at @vellore_vit. Happy World Bamboo Day!

SITE

The terrain of Hyderabad is hilly and undulating, and the site of #RibbonHouse is on the rise of a hill abutting the boundary of the Qutb Shahi Tombs. The site surface is doubly-curved and requires a detailed understanding of the existing levels to arrive at a smooth gradient for the parking garage, to perfectly match the parking floor with the road level, and to ensure that any pavers laid would not come loose or crack due to the variations within the ground level. Fractured flooring ensures that the oddly-shaped stone pavers packed within the space create a higher resolution of detail at every point, adjusting to the undulations and micro-variations in level, resulting in a smooth, continuous surface. “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Parametric design is simply a process in which an It’s super important for designers and architects to be well-acquainted and comfortable with the construction site. Designers who know how something can be fabricated, built or assembled are a great asset to engineers and execution teams. Look closely at the underside of this staircase, and you’ll see something off. Why is this one step the height of three? This is how we turned a tricky height gap into a stunning design feature. Eid Mubarak from BuildAware! Rough sketches today, solid structures tomorrow. #RibbonHouse studio to site

STUDIO

Peekaboo // An evolving feature wall at #RibbonHouse, that plays between light and shadow, view and privacy, denial and reward. Designed using a combination of analog and digital tools, and executed with the help of augmented reality and human intuition! Documenting the process of construction/fabrication is very important to us, it tells a story and depicts how the work evolves on site. What is built together by many minds and many hands is richer than something created in isolation; it can never truly be recreated or replicated in the same manner again. Peekaboo // Not just a feature wall at #RibbonHouse, it serves as a pixelated parametric screen in the courtyard (note the tree), with lightweight cement blocks that are rotated at unique angles over the course of 4.5 floors. The blocks make narrow openings on the lower levels that share a wall with the neighbors, are slanted for privacy on the middle levels and rotate at a larger angle for wider openings at the higher levels (where privacy is not a concern) to let in cool wind and sunlight. At night, Peekaboo is backlit by wall-mounted lights installed on the backside of the blocks. Glimpses of #RibbonHouse staircase details. Because this is a tiny house of 100 sq yards, grand gestures were not possible, but meticulous details were. Small moments and surprises came in the form of crafted ornament and elegant detail, while keeping the base material and color palette subdued to expand the space visually. WeaveX 4.0: HyPArray // These bus shelters have been designed as a respite from Telangana’s scorching sun and torrential monsoon, as people go about their day and wait for public transport, or rest. Eid Mubarak from DesignAware!
