Crumpletecture

Generative Tool: Midjourney 6.0

Year: 2024

Inspired by the texture and topology of the rockscapes of the Deccan Plateau represented in crumpled paper, Crumpletecture is a series of experiments with paper and its translation to architecture via generative AI diffusion models.

At the beginning of the design process, hands are the first tool we use. With GenAI tools, we’ve been finding ways to reconcile between the digital and the analog, the tangible and the intangible. Physical prototyping, materiality and hand-drawn sketches are still relevant starting points, and can create interesting results using GenAI tools. Using Stability AI’s DreamStudio to play with the texture of crumpled paper, we guided it to imagine rock-carved oases, cave dwellings and jagged skyscrapers, all blending together, starting from and and ending as paper.

Crumpletecture was debuted as a part of the exhibition “On Paper, Of Paper” curated by Ankon Mitra for Apparao Galleries at India Design ID 2024.
