Fractals 23.0: Collective Intelligence is a hands-on workshop exploring generative design through the use of analog algorithms. It is a 3D thinking workshop in which participants work in teams and develop algorithms or rules of growth that are demonstrated through geometric aggregation models, resulting in large-scale installations. At the end of the workshop, all resulting installations will be displayed in an exhibition at the same venue.
The workshop is an adaptation of the teaching methods at the Design Research Lab of the AA School of Architecture, London. Since 2011, the Fractals Workshop has been to various cities in India and the Middle East, including Hyderabad, Chennai, Roorkee, Surat, Kochi, Dubai, Sharjah, Bahrain and Doha, and is coming up in Xixinan and Muscat.
The workshop will be taught by architect and director of DesignAware and the Fractals Workshop, Takbir Fatima.
Public Exhibition at the World Design Assembly
As a part of Hyderabad Design Week and the 31st World Design Assembly taking place in Hyderabad from 9-13 October, selected installations from each workshop will be displayed at a Public Exhibition at Hyderabad International Convention Center (HICC) during the international conference, and authors will be credited for their work.
Design Charrette and a Chance to Build for the City
Further, designs shortlisted by a panel of jurors will be entered into a Design Charrette in which selected designs will be further prototyped in a week-long internship with DesignAware and finally fabricated as permanent installations at various locations around Hyderabad identified by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. This is a rare opportunity for young designers and students to have their work become a permanent part of the public realm and urban fabric of the city.
The Government of Telangana has provided a grant for the execution of these permanent installations.
